Student Activities

Student organizations exist to build upon and enrich the classroom experiences for UNA students. Every student can participate in an extensive array of activities and find a place to belong at UNA. Supported by UNA are traditional campus groups such as the Student Government Association, honor societies, and service clubs. Special interest groups, religious organizations, and fraternities and sororities are available.

At the University of North Alabama you experience a wide variety of leadership opportunities individually and through student organizations. Leadership UNA and the Lead Team will give you the kind of training needed to assume active leadership roles on campus. Whether you arrive with outstanding leadership ability or emerging potential there is an organization waiting to meet your needs at UNA.

The Guillot University Center is the center of campus activities for students, faculty, and staff, as well as for University guests. It hosts a myriad of activities from musical entertainment to plays, from large meetings to intimate gatherings, from lectures to cozy corners to chat, from large banquet halls to a place for a snack between classes.

UNA supports an active Greek system. It includes eight fraternities and six sororities, and features a fraternity row and a panhellenic residence for sororities. Through Greek life, you may experience close bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood that tie chapters together at UNA and throughout the world.

UNA recognizes the importance of spiritual growth as part of the student's total education. The Baptist Campus Ministries, Christian Student Center, Wesley Foundation and Cooperative Campus Ministries provide facilities adjacent to campus for various denominations to meet for religious and social activities. Several other religious groups meet in local churches, and most local denominations and faiths have churches and synagogues within walking distance of campus.

Entertainment helps round out campus life. Extracurricular activities include concerts, dances, lectures, movies, comedians, and other live performances. Students not only have the opportunity to participate in these extracurricular activities, but to plan and organize future entertainment.

Participation in athletics is extremely popular at UNA. Although not everyone plays on the varsity level, at UNA you can participate in an intramural sports program at your own level and meet your own needs and interests. Teams from residence halls, organizations, and independent groups can choose from a variety of sports ranging from traditional to non-traditional. There are also many individual sports that are all part of intramural sports.

Student Services

The Director of Student Life coordinates a broad range of services designed to help you succeed. Orientation programs for new students, academic tutoring, free study skills workshops, individual and small group counseling, services addressing the special concerns of students who are physically or learning challenged, substance abuse and wellness programming and a student judicial system are among the available services. Every effort is made to direct academic assistance toward students in a way that best meets individual needs. This starts at freshman orientation and continues throughout the entire university experience. Our Academic Resource Center, which houses a comprehensive microcomputer lab, offers campus-wide academic assistance services through faculty mentoring of students and small groups, computer-assisted and video-assisted independent learning stations and student tutoring.

UNA's Career Services Center provides assistance with making decisions about majors and careers, career advising, and counseling for career concerns. A career resource center, including books and videos, is available to students. For students nearing graduation, Career Services offers assistance in developing job search skills. Resume writing, interview techniques, and job search strategies are taught. Students are encouraged to participate in on-campus job fairs and employment interviews as well as to establish a placement file, which may be shared with potential employers. Opportunities for part time jobs and co-op experiences are available through Career Services.

Located in Bennett Infirmary on Circular Drive, University Health Services is dedicated to providing optimal ambulatory care at reasonable costs for students and other members of the UNA community. Health Services operates Monday through Friday and provides access to a Health Center physician. When appropriate, Health Services makes referrals to other health care providers in the community and maintains an excellent reputation with these providers.
