Graduate School

The programs of graduate studies are offered by the University of North Alabama through its colleges of arts & sciences, business, education, and nursing under the direction of the deans of the colleges and the overall administration, coordination, and supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, according to policies, procedures, and programs established by the Graduate Council and approved by the President and the Board of Trustees.

The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and School to award bachelor's, master's and education specialist degrees. The University holds specialized accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Council on Social Work Education (Baccalaureate), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. UNA is certified by The American Chemical Society.

Requirements for Admission to Graduate Studies

EDUCATION

  • Official GRE or MAT or passing Praxis II score (Praxis II not accepted for Counseling program – these students must take GRE or MAT
  • Copy of Class B teaching certificate

BUSINESS

  • Application
  • $25 application fee
  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended
  • Official GMAT or Executive Option needs all of the following: 1) Current resume reflecting executive potential and eight or more years of professional management or entrepreneurial positions; 2) Written professional statement discussing career objective; 3) letter of recommendation of the applicant’s ability and motivation for graduate management study; and 4) Approval by the College of Business MBA Admissions Committee

MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH OR HISTORY

  • Application
  • $25 application fee
  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended
  • Official GRE or MAT scores for English (GRE required for History majors)
  • Three letters of recommendation

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE

  • Application
  • $25 application fee
  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended
  • Official GRE or MAT scores (not required with a minimum GPA of 2.75 overall)

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GEOSPATIAL SCIENCE

  • Application and $25 application fee
  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended
  • Official GRE score with at least 1,000 on verbal and quantitative scores combined
  • Three Letters of recommendation submitted to the Department of Geography

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

  • Application
  • $25 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from professional sources
  • BSN from professionally accredited nursing program
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • 1 year professional nursing experience (Teaching-Learning alternative only)

TRANSIENTS

FULL TIME IS NINE SEMESTER HOURS IN THE SPRING AND FALL AND SIX SEMESTER HOURS IN THE SUMMER.

LENGTH OF GRADUATE PROGRAM:

  • Master of Arts in Education requires a minimum of 33 semester hours.
  • Master of Arts in Education-Counseling requires a minimum of 48 semester hours.
  • Master of Arts in Education-Alternative Fifth-Year Program requires a minimum of 45 semester hours. (This is an individually tailored program; therefore the minimum hours will vary.)
  • Master of Business Administration requires a minimum of 34 semester hours.
  • Master of Arts in English requires a minimum of 36 semester hours.
  • Master of Arts in History requires a minimum of 33 semester hours.
  • Master of Science in Criminal Justice requires a minimum of 36 semester hours.
