	<title>February 2 - 3 - UNA STEP SING TO BENEFIT UNITED WAY</title>

	University Program Council will host its annual Step Sing competition Feb. 2-3 from 7-10 p.m. each night in Norton Auditorium. The song and chorography competition brings together student-formed teams and raises money for the United Way of the Shoals. In the past, the Step Sing and Step Show competitions has brought in approximately $10,000 in ticket scales, raising around 2 percent of United Way’s annual budget. Student groups are judged based on stage presence, appearance, choreography, musical abilitiy, creativity, and more. 	Several young women at the University of North Alabama will soon compete for the title of Miss UNA during the preliminary pageant Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in Norton Auditorium, where the winner will go on to represent the university, serve the UNA and Shoals communities and promote her platform. The UNA Scholarship Pageant, which has been an annual tradition at the university for 36 years, is a preliminary to the Miss Alabama pageant. Former Miss UNA winners Pam Long (1974), Susie Vaughn (1975) and Pam Battles (1982) have gone on to win the Miss Alabama title and compete in the national Miss America pageant. In addition to taking the Miss UNA title, the winner of the pageant will be awarded a full-tuition and book scholarship, as well as several other prizes. The first runner up will receive a scholarship that covers one half of her tuition, while the second and third runners up will receive scholarships covering one fourth of their tuition costs. 	Performers from the Dance Theatre of Harlem, a leading dance institution in New York City at the Everett Center for Performing Arts, will display their talents in Norton Auditorium at the University of North Alabama Jan. 15 from 2-5 p.m. The performance is in conjunction with UNA’s Distinguished Events Series. According to the theatre’s website, the school is a world class institution that trains young people in classical ballet and provides art education, community outreach, and positive role models. The UNA Distinguished Events Series was developed in 2005 to help expose the community to various sources of arts and culture. For more than 10 years, UNA has engaged the university community in an annual march to commemorate King’s nonviolent approach to ending racial discrimination in the 1960s. This year, SMAC members are working to incorporate more of the student population in the event by being actively involved in the organization process. 	<title>December 16 - HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE JOHN PRENDERGAST TO SPEAK AT COMMENCEMENT</title>

	Bestselling author of “Unlikely Brothers” and human rights advocate John Prendergast will speak to the University of North Alabama fall 2011 graduating class during the commencement ceremony Dec.16 at 7 p.m. in Flowers Hall. Prendergast, who has worked to bring peace to Africa for more than 25 years, is the co-founder of the Enough Project, which is an initiative to put a stop to genocide and crimes against humanity and is connected to the Center for American Progress. In addition to his projects in Africa, Prendergast has also worked for the Clinton White House, the State Department, two members of the U.S. Congress, the National Intelligence Council, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, the International Crisis Group and the U.S. Institute of Peace. In 2010, Prendergast teamed up with actor two-time Golden Globe and Academy Award winner George Clooney to initiate the Satellite Sentinel Project (SS), after they both took a trip to South Sudan. The SSP watches for armed activity and any sign of civil war being reinstated between people of Sudan and South Sudan. The SSP also works to pick up and put an end to mass killings that might take place along the border. 	Students, faculty and campus organizations have the opportunity to give back to needy children in the Shoals area as the University of North Alabama University Program Council partners with the Salvation Army to sponsor a number of children through the 12th annual UNA Angel Tree project. An angel tree is set up in the Office of Student Engagement in the Guillot University Center now through Dec. 8, where interested groups, students or faculty can sponsor a child from ages 1 to 13. UPC asks that sponsors donate basic items like clothing, shoes and toys for each child they choose. 	Workers and students at the Center for Women’s Studies at the University of North Alabama will help eradicate poverty one bead at a time during the “Bead for Life” sale Dec. 5-16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as they sell Ugandan jewelry and send proceeds from sales to the struggling women of Africa. Last year, workers sold approximately $3,000 worth in the jewelry on campus in less than a week. Kelley said 4.7 percent of sales are used for administration and fundraising, but the remaining 95.3 percent goes back to Ugandan women, communities and programs in those areas. The goal of the event is to educate people on what Alabama’s immigration bill is doing to not only the individuals targeted, but the community as well. 	The Gay-Straight Alliance at the University of North Alabama will raise awareness of World AIDS Day Dec. 1 by setting up a table in the Guillot University Center atrium. The students involved in the organization will pass out contraception to protect students against sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS and share information about the disease. The annual event is recognized across the world and was first held in 1988 to show support for people suffering from HIV and to remember those who have died from the disease. UNA senior and Miss Alabama contestant Jamie Brooks, who has worked with the Birmingham AIDS Outreach Program, will also volunteer with the GSA. 	The University of North Alabama Film and Digital Media Productions will present “Storytelling in Short Documentaries” Nov. 19 from 1-4 p.m. in room 129 of the communications building. Because more people are using video in their communication, media literacy has become a crucial skill that college graduates must have before entering the workforce. F&DMP will present speaker Nichole Triche, an assistant professor and director of the Docs Program at Elon University. She won Best Student Film in 2006 for her work “Metacarpus” at the Asheville Film Festival and Best Experimental Film at the Scene First Student Film Festival. The Nov. 19 event will include a presentation on producing authenticity in artistic expression from 1-2 p.m., a question and answer session from 2-2:30 p.m., a presentation on distributing communication with multiple platforms from 3-4 p.m., and an additional question and answer session from 4-4:30 p.m. The event is funded by the Office of Student Engagement and the student activity fee. 	The Japanese University Meal Project at the University of North Alabama will host an event called "Thanksprayers Day" Nov. 17 from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Stone Lodge on campus. Since the disaster that struck Japan in March of this year, JUMP! and the Office of Student Engagement have held a variety of fundraisers to send to the American Red Cross to help victims in Japan. During International Education Week, JUMP! organizers will host a Japanese autumn-themed event and serve food, along with games and three iTunes gift cards as prizes to attendees. The group will also present information about the disaster, what the UNA community has done this year to help Japan and show examples of how UNA has aided victims in Japan.
