Meet Our Staff
Melissa Medlin, Director
Melissa Tucker Medlin joined UNA in July 2008, after spending nearly 18 years as a student (MA, 1996 and BA, 1994) and student affairs professional at The University of Alabama. Melissa says being the Director of Career Planning and Development is her dream job—she loves being at UNA, working with the students and faculty and having the opportunity to develop a very important resource area for students. “I am excited to have the opportunity to work directly with students as they make their choices about careers and work while also developing my own skills as a Student Affairs Administrator. I consider it an honor to assist students in recognizing their true potential and the many skills which they possess that will contribute to them being successful," says Medlin. She and her husband, James Medlin, have two children, Tucker and Heather and all are excited to be a part of the UNA community.
Jennifer Smith, Assistant Director
Jennifer joined Career Planning and Development in January of 2010. Before joining Career Planning and Development, she advised undecided students within the College of Arts and Science at UNA for almost seven years. "I am very excited about combining my advising skills with career planning in order to best serve the needs of the students at UNA. I love seeing students have "aha" moments and encouraging them to dream big." Jennifer assists students with career counseling, assessment interpretation, resume preparation, mock interviews, job searches, decisions regarding majors and much more. She graduated from UNA with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts: Public Communications (2002) and a Master of Arts in Community Counseling (2007). She is married to David Smith, and they have two sons, Isaiah and Spencer.
Amanda Terry, Employer Development Coordinator
Amanda joined UNA in January of 2014. Before joining Career Planning and Development, she spent over three years working in legislative affairs as Legislative Liaison for Alabama State Senator Tammy L. Irons. She is a 2010 graduate of UNA with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communication Arts: Public Relations and a minor in Marketing and brings with her great marketing and networking skills. As Employer Development Coordinator, Amanda serves as the primary external liaison to the community in effort to cultivate recruiting partnerships with local, state, regional, national and international employers for students and alumni. She also manages co-op and intern students and their application process. Amanda was born and raised in the Shoals and is delighted to have the opportunity to work in Higher Ed and Student Affairs. She feels like it is an honor to be able to give back to such an exceptional university that served as the foundation to her success. Amanda is excited to be a part of the Career Planning Development team as she is passionate about furthering education and helping others find success.
Kay Wammack, Senior Administrative Assistant
Kay Wammack joined UNA in February, 2009, as Sr. Administrative Assistant. She graduated with a B.S. from Samford University and worked in the insurance industry in Birmingham before moving to the Shoals area. Kay and her husband, Chip, have two children, Paul and Rachel. Kay appreciates the opportunity to help students realize their potential and begin the journey toward achieving their life goals.
Abbey Thomas, Practicum Student
Abbey Thomas joined Career Planning and Development as a Practicum Student from the Community Counseling graduate program at UNA. She attended Mississippi State University for several years before finishing her Bachelor's degree and entering graduate school at UNA. Although Abbey was born in Louisiana and spent a number of years in Tennessee and Mississippi, she was raised predominately in Huntsville, AL, and is pleased to be back in North Alabama, which she considers her home. Abbey is also currently the Graduate Assistant for the Distance Learning Department at UNA. "I am eager to gain the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to effectively aid UNA students and alumni with their career needs and goals. I am thrilled to be working in the college setting, and I really look forward to the opportunity." Abbey and her husband, Will, reside in Florence with their two dog children, Sophie and Mason.
