Scholarships

The Department of Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene at the University of North Alabama has three types of scholarships for which students can apply. All three types of scholarships can provide financial aid in conjunction with the support a student may receive from other sources.

Endowed Scholarships Endowments allow the Department to commit to providing support for more than a one-year period. Incoming freshmen and transfer students majoring in chemistry or industrial hygiene may apply for an endowed scholarship offering from $400 to $2000 per year for up to four years. The application deadline for the endowed scholarship is February 15. Awards are made on the basis of academic achievements and the potential for future excellence as indicated by letters of recommendation. After initial selection for an endowed scholarship, recipients are required to meet the following criteria in order to remain qualified:

  1. make satisfactory progress toward graduation with a major in professional chemistry, environmental chemistry or industrial hygiene,
  2. enroll in at least one chemistry or industrial hygiene course for both fall and spring semesters,
  3. maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all chemistry and industrial hygiene courses and,
  4. maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all courses.

Several of the endowed scholarships have additional criteria stipulated by the original donors. These are:

· Franklin Lenfesty Endowed Scholarship - the recipient must participate actively in the North Alabama Chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society.

· Raymond Isbell Endowed Scholarship - the scholarship shall be awarded to an incoming freshman from Colbert County High School.

· Shirley Isbell Endowed Scholarship - the scholarship shall be awarded to an incoming freshman from a high school in Colbert County.

NIOSH Scholarships The Department has been awarded a training grant by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This grant provides for eleven $1,000 scholarships, which are awarded for a one-year period and are renewable for up to four years, contingent on the continuation of funding by NIOSH. The recipients must major in industrially hygiene and after initial selection are required to meet the following criteria in order to remain qualified:

  1. make satisfactory progress toward graduation with a major in industrial hygiene,
  2. enroll in at least one chemistry or industrial hygiene course for both fall and spring semesters,
  3. maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all industrial hygiene courses and,
  4. maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 in all courses.
  5. participate actively in the UNA Industrial Hygiene Student Association.

A single application form is used for all Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene Endowed Scholarships NIOSH scholarships and the selection committee considers each application for all of the available scholarships for which that applicant is eligible.

One-semester Scholarships All chemistry majors and industrial hygiene majors are eligible to apply for a one-semester scholarship. Both financial need and scholastic achievement are considered in awarding these scholarships, usually ranging from $100 to $400. The application deadline for these scholarships is the preceding November 1 for a spring semester scholarship and the preceding May 1 for a fall semester scholarship.
