Republicans claim majority in Alabama House and Senate for 1st time in 136 years

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The Alabama Republican Party on Tuesday evening declared that its candidates had captured a majority of seats in Alabama's House and Senate, ending 136 years of Democratic control.
It marks the first time since 1874 -- the post-Civil War period known as Reconstruction -- that the Republicans have held control of the state Legislature. The Republicans cited unofficial results showing that the GOP will have 60 of 105 seats in the Alabama House and 22 of 35 seats in the Senate.

Coon Dog Cemetery Labor Day unique celebration

Every Labor Day a unique celebration is held to honor a special group of deceased at a cemetery west of Tuscumbia. The honorees list includes names such as Patches, Preacher, Smoky, Bean Blossom Bomma, Night Ranger, and Famous Amos. If this doesn’t sound like your typical list of historical figures it’s because these dearly departed are of the 4-legged variety. You heard right…there is a special graveyard and an event dedicated completely to dogs. These are not just any dogs though. This is a celebration at the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard and only “certified” Coon Dogs are buried at this prestigious location. It’s the only cemetery of its kind in the world. I encourage the reader to view the official web site for more information on the rigorous process involved in certifying that only coonhounds are buried in the cemetery. It’s good for a chuckle. The celebration is hosted by the Tennessee Valley Coon Hunter’s Association and entertainment includes music, dancing, food and a “liar's contest”. Hours are 1pm to 4pm. For more information call 1-800-344-0783 or visit http://www.coondogcemetery.com.
