Test Taking

What is your objective? To obtain the most points you can in the amount of time given.

General Tips

  • Always read directions and questions thoroughly.
  • When using scantron sheets:
    Avoid erasing answers if possible.
Don't skip questions-this can disorder your answers.
Suggestions: If it is allowed, write the answers on the test handout, leaving yourself 10-12 minutes to mark your scantron sheet.
  • Make sure you know what the question is asking! Underline key words-at least, not, except, don't.
  • Go on your first intuition, feeling, or reaction to the question. Professors don't pattern their answers--don't pick "c" just because the last four answers have been "b".
  • If you are certain about an incorrect answer, change it. However, 9 times out of 10 the first answers are correct.

Multiple Choice Tests

  • Read all possible answers.
  • Eliminate incorrect answers, then re-read the questions again, inserting each answer choice.
  • Anticipate the answer before you read all the answers and try to locate it among the options.
  • If you have difficulty with a question, skip it and go back later.

True/False Questions

  • If one part of the statement is false, the whole question is false.
  • If the question has extreme words in it like all or nothing or none, the answer is much more likely to be false.

Matching

  • Match the answers you are sure of first and gradually work into the ones you are not sure of.
  • Mark through the terms you have already used/answered.

Essays

  • Read the question thoroughly and underline key words.
  • Outline the essay question into sub-headings.
  • Include all subjects covered by the question. Make sure the answer pertains to the question. Be clear and concise; it is not the length, but the content that makes a difference.
  • Jot down important information as you remember it, then organize it into an orderly and readable answer.
