HPER GRADUATE PROGRAMS

 

The Program

            The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation offers a graduate degree program in physical
education leading to the Masters of Art in Education degree and qualification for recommendation for the Alabama
Class A Professional Certificate at the P-12 level in Physical Education.

            The department also offers the nontraditional fifth-year program leading to the M.A. Ed. Degree and Class
A Professional Certification to individuals who have not completed a teacher education baccalaureate degree. 
A Master of Arts degree is also available in Health Promotion and Human Performance. 
This program, which is individually tailored to the needs of the student, provides an opportunity for advanced study
for those individuals whose careers or personal interests require additional knowledge or research skills, further study
in their area of expertise or particular coursework for professional or personal enhancement.  This program provides
extended opportunities for individuals interested in teaching health-and fitness-related activities.

 

P-12 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

CLASS A, TEACHER CERTIFICATION

SBE/NCATE APPROVED (33 HOUR PROGRAM)

            General Admission Requirements:  In addition to the general requirements of admission to graduate studies,
programs within the
College of Education have the following specific requirements:  (1) Satisfactory scores on either
the MAT (Miller Analogies Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination); (2) GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale; and (3) satisfaction
of the requirements for the Alabama Class B Professional Certificate.
Note: Students with less than the recommended grade point average or test score may be admitted based upon a sliding
scale which specifies particular grade point averages and corresponding test scores.

NONTRADITIONAL FIFTH-YEAR PROGRAM (60 HOUR PROGRAM)

            General Admission Requirements include:  (1) 35 on MAT or 800 on GRE (verbal and quantitative);
(2) GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale on all college/university courses attempted; (3) completion of a 64-semester-hour
general studies requirement including humanities, social sciences, science and mathematics; and (4) completion
of a simple or comprehensive teaching field major required for undergraduate certification.

 HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION

Health Promotion and HumanPerformance

(33 HOUR PROGRAM)

            General Admission includes:  (1) satisfactory scores on either the MAT or GRE; (2) GPA of 3.0 on
4.0 scale; (3) hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university; and (4) have completed
64 hours of general studies as an undergraduate, including courses in humanities, social sciences and
mathematics.  NOTE:  Additional prerequisites may be required if the applicant did not major in the field
of study.  Students who do not satisfy the minimal criteria for unconditional admission may be considered
for conditional admission.
