Dr. Will Verrone, who teaches in the English Department and who is
the author of The Avant Garde Feature Film: A Critical History and
Adaptation and the Avant Garde, will lecture on Ishmael Reed's work
in film and screenwriting on Monday, March 19th at 2 pm in the Loft
of the GUC.
Tennessee Reed, poet and memoirist, will read from her poetry on
March 20th, at 11 am in the Performance Center of the GUC. Her
collections include: City Beautiful, Airborne, and Electric
Chocolate.
Ishmael Reed, fiction writer, poet, playwright, essayist, and
commentator will read from his works on March 20th at 12:30 pm in
the Performance Center of the GUC. Two of Ishmael Reed's books have
been nominated for National Book Awards; a book of poetry, Conjure,
was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize; he became a MacArthur Fellow in
1998; and the Gale Research Company cites his "Beware Do Not Read
This Poem" as one of the approximately twenty poems that teachers
and librarians have identified as the most frequently studied in
literature courses. Harold Bloom designated Mumbo Jumbo as one of
the 500 most important books of the Western canon.
