Endowed Scholarships for English Majors

Books-A-Million/T.S. Stribling.  Open to full-time students majoring in English.  This scholarship is available for one academic year, but recipients may apply for subsequent years.  Selected by the Department of English. A separate application is required. Contact the Department of English for more information. The deadline to apply is December 1 of each year.

Dr. C. William Foster.  Special preference shall be given to English and Professional Writing majors, followed by Language Arts majors.  Each scholarship is for one academic year only.  Prior recipients may reapply during subsequent years.  Selected by the Department of English. Eleanor Parks Gaunder. Recipients shall be full-time students who are pursuing a Master's Degree in English and are resuming their education after an absence of at least five years. Preference is given to women, to the degree permitted by law. Selected by the Department of English.

Dr. Jean L. Johnson.  English Majors who have achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA.  Preference will be given to students majoring in English Education.  This scholarship is for one academic year, but prior recipients may reapply.  A separate application is required.  Contact the Department of English for more information. William D. Johnson.  Awarded to deserving students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students majoring in English and Language Arts.  This scholarship is for one academic year, but prior recipients may reapply.  A separate application is required.  Contact the Department of English for more information. Richard Glenn Lentz.  Open to full-time students pursuing degrees in the Departments of English or History, or in programs of study in journalism or media studies.  Selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Lindsey Stricklin Memorial.  Awarded to graduate English majors or undergraduate English majors (English option or Language Arts option) with a minimum 3.0 cumulative average (3.5 cumulative average on the graduate level) who demonstrate evidence of financial need.  Preference to members of Sigma Tau Delta, former students of Pinhook School and residents of Lutts, Tennessee.  This scholarship is for one academic year only, but prior recipients may apply during subsequent years.  Selected by the Department of English. A separate application is required. Contact the Department of Education for more information. The deadline to apply is December 1 of each year.

Carol W. Wood Academic Achievement Award. Recipients shall be full-time students majoring in English/Language Arts with an expressed intention of becoming English teachers. Entering freshmen may be considered based on high school performance. Selection shall be based solely upon academic achievement, without regard for financial need. Recipients may be eligible for subsequent years, provided that they remain enrolled and qualify. Selection is made by the Department of English.

Sandra Cowan Murray Permanent Endowment Scholarship.  Open to full-time students enrolled in the Department of English who have graduated from Florence High School and are pursuing a major in English. The recipient(s) of the scholarship funds shall be selected by faculty members of the English Department in accordance with rules, policies, and procedures to be established by the English Faculty.
