April 22, 2010 at UNA

Forms and Information will be available January 2010

Thank you to those who supported IFC's 1st Annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes that raised $1,000 for Safe Place!

Florence, Alabama on April 23rd, men from all walks of life will walk one mile in women’s highheeled shoes through UNA to protest rape, sexual assault & gender violence. This event is sponsored by the UNA Inter Fraternity Council. Proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will benefit Safe Place’s violence prevention efforts, and rape crisis services in the North West Regional Area.

WHO: Male community members and leaders will proclaim their solidarity with the rape prevention movement by marching in high heels, with women and children marching at their side. Educators, students, law enforcement officers, elected and appointed officials, and others are expected to participate.

WHEN: The march is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. with registration starting at 1:30p.m. in the back of the Gulliot University Center at UNA. Men, women, and children are invited to participate and walk-on registrants are welcome. Men are encouraged (but not required) to walk in women’s shoes and participants are being asked to obtain $10.00 in sponsorship. High heels will not be provided, but men are encouraged to look at Payless.com or walkamileinhershoes.com. “One in three women has experienced gender violence in her lifetime. A woman is raped every 90seconds in America,” Said Frank Baird, Founder of the March. “That means someone you know, someone you care about has been the victim of sexual violence. This violence does not just affect women. Men are hurt and angered when women they care about are raped. Men are hurt and angered when they try to develop relationships with women in an atmosphere of fear and mistrust and blame. And the same violence that targets women also targets men because rape isn’t about sex, it’s about power, control and violence.” Inspired by the old saying, “You can’t understand a person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,” men will literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes.

This event is held by the Inter-fraternity council of UNA. These fraternity men encourage the community to participate. All proceeds will benefit Safe Place. Safe Place Inc, is a provider of free services to victims of domestic violence and their families, a place to stay that is safe and free from violence for anyone experiencing abuse, a community awareness and education program, teaching the community that violence is not acceptable. Safe Place is a nonprofit organization funded by United Way, grants and community efforts. For more information visit www.nwalsafeplace.org.
