UNA Habitat for Humanity

University of North Alabama Campus Chapter

UNA Habitat for HumanityUniversity of North Alabama HFH is a campus affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. UNA Habitat for Humanity, associated with the Shoals Habitat for Humanity chapter, works in partnership with people in need to build decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Student volunteers from UNA and members of Shoals Habitat provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Student members of UNA's Habitat chapter work alongside corporate and private donors to raise funds for building projects. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Membership in UNA's campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity provides university students with an opportunity to perform community service and contribute to Shoals residents in need of livable housing. Students participating in UNA's Habitat chapter may also participate in nationwide HFH builds and programs like Collegiate Challenge. "Some of the greatest memories of my college career have been made while working with Habitat for Humanity. There is no better feeling in the world than to watch a hard-working family receive their new home, which I helped to build. Habitat has taught me to believe in the power of togetherness and to never underestimate my own abilities (including working on top of a roof)."
