Visiting Scholar in Residence
History:
The University of North Alabama was established in 1830, and is one of
the oldest universities in the nation. UNA is located in the city of
Florence, on the literary rich Tennessee River.
Academic Colleges:
UNA is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and
Programs, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, The Council on
Social Work Education and Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and School, including world-class colleges of
Business, Nursing and Allied Health, Arts and Sciences, and Education,
over 100 professional majors to choose from.

Technology:
UNA has a modern campus-wide computer network and many computer
laboratories for its students. All residence halls are ported for
voice, video and data, which enable students to connect to the Internet
and stay in touch with e-mail from various locations throughout the
campus.
Facilities:
The UNA campus has various educational facilities, including Academic
Resource Center, library, state-of-the-art sports center, dining hall,
medical clinic, residence hall, ESL learning Center, Career Planning
and Placement Center, Guillot Student Center, International Student
Services.
Residence Halls
The residence halls at UNA provide the best facilities. All the dorms
have air conditioning and heater, as well as phones, television and
cable outlet. All the dorms are located around the proximity of the
campus and provided with security entrance to make sure students can
walk to their classes, laboratories and student center in 10 minutes.
International students are arranged by the university to live on campus
during their first year so that they can adapt to the school in a short
time and immerse into the university as well as American life.
Activities:
UNA has over 110 various student organizations and associations. Every
student can join any organization according to their interest, such as
international student organization, student association, fraternity and
sorority. By joining various kinds of organizations, students will be
able to have a wonderful university experience and learn valuable
skills, leadership and team work.
English ESL Program
In order to help international students gain mastery of the English
language, the ESL program offered by the school is accredited by the
CEA, which provides additional value to UNA’s English language program.
The University holds the size of ESL class to not more than 15 students
to 1 instructor. Also the University operates an ESL computer lab to
allow students to advance their own skills at their own pace.
American Culture and Life
The University sponsors a Community Friends Program that provides
opportunities for international students to experience life with an
American host family. These experiences may be as short as one day,
where a student would join an American family for an outing (such as
attending the symphony or a sporting event). They can also live with an
American family for a semester that will enrich the student with a
personal cultural experience.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate: high school graduate, TOEFL score of 500 (IBT score of
61) and above. Accepts IELTS results (5.5 and above)
Graduate: Undergraduate degree, TOEFL score of 550 (IBT score of 79)
and above. Accepts IELTS results (6.0 and above)
If international students reach the required TOEFL score, they can
apply for undergraduate and graduate schools directly. If students
don’t have TOEFL, they can take ESL classes at UNA. When students pass
the TOEFL exam, they can choose from one of the 4 colleges for further
studies.
