Glossary of Terms
The information contained on this page is designed to help you get your admission process started. It covers various topics from Application Fee to Standardized test requirements.
Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of fifty dollars ($50.00 U.S.) is required of every international applicant. Include an international money order or U.S. check made payable to the University of North Alabama or fill out the payment with credit card section in the application form. No wire transfers or application fee waivers.
Affidavit of Support
An original letter in English on official bank stationery must be submitted from a bank or other financial institution in which the sponsor of the student has savings deposits, certificates of deposit, money market certificates or other types of accounts containing readily available funds. This letter must provide a specific amount of funds; a letter without any amount is not acceptable. The minimum amount required in this letter must be equal to $18,000. Letters must be signed and dated within one year of the time the student plans to enroll. Financial sponsors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents must submit the I-134 Immigration form which can be printed by clicking here.
Application Requirements
In compliance with accreditation standards, all admission documents such as high school, college diploma, and university degree sheet must be official:
- UNA does not require the original diploma or degree sheet, but a copy of the original document must be notarized or attested.
- The notary or attester must be provided by the school or university attended, or by a government official, or by a government-approved notary firm.
- Copies of non-notarized documents, scanned or faxed documents will not be accepted.
Conditional Admission
An international student may be conditionally admitted when s/he meets all admission requirements with the exception of proficiency of English language or GMAT requirement. Such student will be required to enroll at UNA ESL program and successfully complete all Level 5 courses before being permitted to move into academic degree programs at UNA. Sometimes graduate students are conditionally admitted when their test scores are lower than required. There is a formula that is used for this admission. Students must maintain a certain GPA or be dismissed.
Deferral
Deferral means students cannot come to UNA for the semester for which they were first admitted, but they wish to defer their admission to the next semester. The policy for the deferring to another semester is as follows:
- Student sends application for admittance to UNA (Application 1)
- Deferral 1: Student does not get VISA or decides not to come that semester, but wishes to defer admittance to the next semester. Written correspondence from student or student's agent stating such must be sent to UNA.
- Deferral 2: Student does not get VISA or decides not to come that semester, but wishes to defer admittance to the next semester. Written correspondence from student or student's agent stating such must be sent to UNA.
NOTE: Students who cannot come after their application has been deferred 2 times must now submit a new and complete application packet. UNA will not defer a student but 2 times after the initial application is processed.
