UNA Campus Network
The University of North Alabama maintains a comprehensive network which allows users access to mainframe applications, the Internet, and campus and Internet e-mail. The University e-mail system is powered by Infinite InterChange including the WebMail Interface. A fiber-optic backbone connects users to 20 servers located around the campus. These servers include Novell Netware, UNIX, and Windows NT operating systems.
Nearly 500 staff and faculty members utilize e-mail, review student records, access online library information, and surf the Internet from their offices. Additionally, over 2000 student users access e-mail and the Internet from designated locations on campus as well as from their homes. Students enrolled in designated programming courses are given access to the MUSIC system, which allows for full screen editing and compilation of programs. Designated English classes take advantage of an almost paperless composition class, utilizing online interaction with their instructor through the English Connect software installed on network servers.
Mainframe
The University of North Alabama mainframe computer serves the administrative computing needs of the University, and provides students in designated programming courses access to a mainframe environment by utilizing the MUSIC system.
The mainframe computer consists of an IBM ES 9000 Model 190 with numerous disk and tape drives. There are currently 4 printers and 10 terminal controllers attached to the mainframe, as well as a variety of mainframe terminals and PC's using emulation cards and software.
The Computer Room, which houses the mainframe, is controlled by a Sensaphone room monitor as well as an extensive uninterrupted power supply system, which protects the mainframe in the event of a power outage.
