How to Access Periodicals for Distance Learning
To identify periodicals, students should conduct a search in a periodical index or database (to view a complete list of the databases available through UNA, visit the UNA Libraries Databases page). From the list of citations the student should try to locate a copy of desired articles. Many full-text articles are available online through various electronic databases, including InfoTrac and EBSCOhost. Many other articles are available in the Collier Library periodicals collection.Check the periodicals holdings page to check the availability of a specific periodical.
Students within one hour's drive of the campus should visit Collier Library in person to photocopy desired articles or ERIC documents from UNA's collection. There are coin and MANE card operated photocopiers and microform reader/printers provided on the Ground Floor. Articles not held in Collier may be obtained for UNA students via Interlibrary Loan.
Students living at a greater distance from Florence may wish to visit their nearest public and academic libraries to use periodicals. For materials not available through local libraries, distance learning students may request photocopies of journal articles from Collier Library. The guidelines for this service are as follows:
- Complete online form
-
OR - Fax (256-765-4884) or e-mail complete periodical citations to Leigh Thompson, User Services Coordinator specifying the following:
1) UNA student's name
2) mailing address
3) e-mail address
4) telephone and/or fax number
5) UNA student ID number
6) distance learning course being taken
7) date by which the material is needed
Complete citation includes:
a) author(s)
b) title of article
c) title of journal
d) volume and issue number
e) pages
f) date
g) source of reference
- Photocopied articles will be mailed or faxed to the student at a cost of $ .10 per page. An invoice will be included with the material sent. Payment should be sent to the User Services Coordinator with checks payable to the University of North Alabama. Prompt payment will ensure continuation of library privileges.
- Items from Collier Library's collection will generally be sent within two business days of receipt of the request. Students must submit requests through Interlibrary Loan for materials not owned by UNA. These requests may take as long as 3-4 weeks to be filled. It may be faster to locate periodicals within local libraries or by using commercial document delivery services such as UnCover.
- If the full-text of an article is available through one of the library's subscription databases, students may print or download the item locally while visiting Collier Library or from a remote site using a password.
- Priority in supplying articles will be given to the first five items requested by an individual within a week's time; others will be processed as time permits.
- This service is limited to individual articles of 30 pages or less.
The following copyright guidelines apply to photocopies supplied from the Collier Library collection:
- Only ONE article from a single periodical issue may be copied for an individual.
- No more than ten percent of a copyrighted work (such as a book) may be copied.
- No multiple copies will be made of any copyrighted work.
