Information Literacy - Library Instruction

Information Literacy

Information literacy is the ability to recognize an information need, locate relevant information resources, evaluate the information resources, and effectively use all types of information in a responsible way. The Librarians at Collier Library are committed to promoting information literacy and strive to offer library instruction sessions that follow the American Association of College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. According to these standards an information literate individual is able to:

  • Determine the extent of information needed
  • Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
  • Evaluate information and its sources critically
  • Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
