Information Literacy - Library Instruction
Information Literacy
Information literacy is the ability to recognize an
information need, locate relevant information resources, evaluate the
information resources, and effectively use all types of information in a
responsible way. The Librarians at Collier Library are committed to promoting
information literacy and strive to offer library instruction sessions that
follow the American Association of College & Research Libraries’
(ACRL)
Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. According to
these standards an information literate individual is able to:
- Determine the extent of information needed
- Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
- Evaluate information and its sources critically
- Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base
- Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
- Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
