Library Assignment Design

A well-designed library-related assignment can be an effective teaching tool. It helps students develop information literacy and research skills that can in turn improve the quality of their papers and projects. Unfortunately, library assignments can confuse and frustrate students who are unfamiliar with the ever-changing resources that the library has to offer. When instructors and librarians collaborate they can create library assignments that systematically teach students the information literacy skills they need for academic and professional success.  To facilitate collaboration we offer instructors the opportunity to consult with a librarian on improving library-related assignments.

Collaboration on library-related assignments can begin in a number of ways. If instructors develop a list of skills or research concepts they want students to master, librarians can then assist them in developing an associated assignment. Another option is for instructors to share an existing assignment. A librarian can then share ideas for making the assignment even more effective. For tips on developing an effective library-related assignment see the Designing Effective Library Assignments page.  Collaborating with a librarian can help you design an effective library assignment and can let you know if the assignment is feasible given the UNA Libraries collection strengths and weaknesses.

Consultations can be done in person, via email, or by phone.
