Professor Newton W. Bates publishes the first textbook on the history of Alabama for use in schools. The book, History and Civil Government of Alabama, was the “outgrowth of five years’ work in the classroom,” Bates states in his introduction, attributing his efforts to the need for a more substantive treatment of Alabama’s history.
