Department of Music and Theatre

Credit and Time Requirements

The institution has established the unit of credit as the semester hour, representing, on average, at least three hours of work each week, including in-class activity and out-of- class preparation/study, for a period of 15 weeks of instruction, plus an additional period of final examination.  Lecture courses campus-wide are assigned one semester hour of credit for each 50-minute period of recitation per week, plus two hours of preparation.  Laboratory courses in music are assigned one semester hour of credit for two 50-minute recitation periods per week, plus two hours of preparation.  All music ensemble courses have two or more 50-minute periods of recitation per week and are assigned one semester hour of credit, regardless of the number of recitation periods per week.  Assigned hours of preparation for ensembles vary, but in all cases total at least 2 hours per week. Applied music courses are assigned one semester hour of credit for 30 minutes of private instruction and three hours of private practice per week.  Lecture courses taught during the four-week June and July summer terms and during the eight-week regular summer session, are designed to provide the same amounts of in-class instruction and out-of-class preparation/study as described above, albeit on a compressed calendar schedule.  Applied music is not offered during the June and July terms, but is offered as an eight-week summer term class.  No laboratory or ensemble classes are offered during the summer terms or regular summer session.
