FLORENCE, Ala. — Dr. Barry Morris has a new role at the University of North Alabama in the spring 2008 semester: director of planned giving. The longtime professor and department chairman’s financial background and Foundation experience make him the perfect fit the new position, according to Dr. Alan Medders, UNA vice president for advancement.

“Dr. Morris has been involved with the UNA Foundation since its inception, and he has been passionate about his service there. That, with his background in finance, long history in the community and relationships with alumni, will make this a great transition,” Medders said

Morris has taught in the Department of Economics and Finance since 1974 and has chaired the department since 1992. He plans to retire as professor and chairman this summer while continuing his new role as director of planned giving.

“I am anxious to be part of a team of dedicated professionals whose objective is generating resources that will enrich the academic environment of faculty and students and contribute to the quality of life of the local community. This is one part of the university that I have very much wanted to be a part of since its very beginning,” Morris said.

As planned giving director, Morris will assist alumni and friends of UNA in making gifts to the university through a variety of planned giving vehicles, such as trusts, annuities and other estate plans. Morris said it’s a way to “enhance their retirement and reduce taxes while, at the same time, making a gift to the university.”

“I believe that once people are informed of ways to give that can be a win/win for themselves and for the university as well, they’ll be inclined to make those gifts,” he said.
