FLORENCE, Ala. – Seven students, two alumni and two band directors from the University of North Alabama will travel to Washington, D.C., to perform for a crowd of more than 1,500 at the banquet of the annual Appalachian Regional Commission conference Feb. 25.
The group, which makes up the UNA Jazz Combo, was invited by Keith Jones, a UNA alumnus helping organize the ARC banquet. Jones, who also works with the North Alabama Council of Local Governments, had heard the band perform at NACOLG’s annual Senior Winter Ball. NACOLG is a division of ARC.
“Keith is very proud of his alma mater and wanted to share it with the rest of the ARC,” said UNA band director Lloyd Jones.
The UNA Jazz Combo will perform a wide variety of jazz standards, rock classics and danceable Latin music at the banquet. The rhythm section will also play during the program’s reception.
“This is a great opportunity for our band program and university to get our names out there in front of an entirely new audience hat has most likely never heard of the University of North Alabama,” Lloyd Jones said. “We were honored to have been asked and are proud to represent the university in this manner.
Student members of the UNA Jazz Combo include Jack Albert, of Decatur; Russ Belote, of Madison; Colene Burns, of Hayden; Adam Byars, of Clay; Brad Greene, of Athens; Shawn Terry, of Athens; and Drew White, of Killen. Alumni joining the Jazz Combo include Brad Hanback, of Florence, and Joe Stallworth, of Panama City, Fla. The group is led by band director Lloyd Jones and assistant Iain Moyer.
