FLORENCE, Ala.—The annual Flutes and Friends program will be hosted by the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Florence Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in a concert to benefit the University of North Alabama Flute Ensemble.

Donations will be accepted.

The performance will feature UNA’s Flute Ensemble playing “Jupiter” from Gustaf Holst’s “The Planets,” student flute ensembles from Huntsville and community musicians with Jim Champion conducting.

Some other pieces to be performed include: “Pavane” by Faure, “Yakkity Flutes,” “Trio” by Kummer and “The Shepherd on the Rock” by Schubert. UNA students, alumni and members of the local community will be performing.

Florence native Jim Champion will serve as guest conductor. The 39-year veteran band director retired from teaching in June 2007. Throughout his career, Champion worked with bands from Alabama and Florida, consistently leading them to superior ratings in district, state and regional contests.

Ann Hendren, UNA’s flute instructor, is coordinator of the event, along with alumnus Alan Flowers. The pair will play in multiple performances during the program.
