UNA HOSTS ‘BLAST FROM THE PAST’ HOMECOMING WEEK EVENTS

FLORENCE, Ala. — The University of North Alabama will kick off its 2008 “Blast from the Past” Homecoming Oct. 21.

The celebration will open with the annual Step Show, featuring several student associations, at Flowers Hall. The performance, which has become a UNA Homecoming tradition, will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased at the Office of Student Engagement. The Homecoming week celebration will continue Oct. 24 with the Jack Karnes Memorial Golf Tournament, which will be held at the Florence Golf and Country Club. There will be two rounds in the tournament. The first will tee off at 8 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. The cost is $100 per player or $400 per team. Reservations are required for participation in the tournament. To register, or for more information, call the Office of Alumni Relations at 256-765-4201.

The Alumni Awards banquet will also be held Oct.24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Guillot University Center Banquet Hall. Honors to be presented include the Alumni-of-the-Year Awards, Alumni Service Awards and Promising Alumni Awards. The 2008 Homecoming Court will also be presented during the banquet. The cost to attend is $20 per individual.

Also on Oct. 24 there will be a volleyball game at 7 p.m. in Flowers Hall as well as a soccer game, also at 7 p.m. at the new athletic field by Flowers Hall.

The Homecoming Pep Rally will be held at 9 p.m. All UNA Lion fans are invited to join the UNA students at the new athletic field.

The Jerry Davis Memorial Tennis Tournament will open Saturday’s events at 8 a.m. on Oct. 25 at the University Tennis Complex on Hermitage Drive.

Other Saturday morning, events will include a breakfast for the past presidents of the Student Government Association beginning at 8:30 in the University Center’s Faculty and Staff Commons. The Athletic Association Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in the University Performance Center. The annual Homecoming Parade will begin at 11 a.m.

Beginning at 3 p.m., the Alumni and Friends pre-game tent party will take place on Spirit Hill, outside Braly Stadium. At 4 p.m., the Lion Walk will take place on Royal Avenue as the team makes its way to the stadium.

The pre-game show will begin at 5:30 p.m. All events will culminate with the kickoff at 6 p.m. as the UNA Lions face the Valdosta State Blazers. Fans are encouraged to wear purple as part of UNA athletics’ Purple Haze.
