FLORENCE, Ala. — The University of North Alabama Department of Art is hosting a visiting artist exhibit featuring Bruce Larsen’s “Winged Creatures,” on display now through Nov. 20.
Larsen is well known for his “junk sculptures,” typically made of whatever materials he can find, from dilapidated and rusted appliances to old driftwood. In addition to his work on sculptures, he is an accomplished special-effects artist. His work has been featured in several feature films, including “The Patriot,” “Black Knight,” “Planet of the Apes” and “Dumb and Dumberer.”
Larsen has also been commissioned to create several important pieces, including gifts for dignitaries such as the President of East Timor, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, and Abbot Shi Yongxin of the Shaolin Temple.
Larsen’s work has recently been on exhibit at the Eastern Shore Art Center in Fair Hope, the Mobile Museum of Art and in Pietrasanta, Italy. He has won many awards, including the National Olympic Art Competition, Best of Show at the University of Mobile and the Alabama Artist Award.;>
Larsen, a native of Fairfield, Ala., received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Auburn University in 1986.
The exhibit is on display Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. There will be a gallery reception with Larsen at 4 p.m. Nov. 20. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UNA art department at 256-765-4384.
