UNA TAKES GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK TO AREA SCHOOLS

National Geographic program highlights Americas
FLORENCE, Ala. — The University of North Alabama is taking area schoolchildren on a tour of the Americas this week as part of Geography Awareness Week 2008. UNA geography students and faculty are visiting K-6 schools, sharing lessons on the physical, ecological and cultural geography of the Americas.
“This is an excellent opportunity for area schools and schoolchildren as well as for the geography students here at UNA,” said Dr. Lisa Keys-Matthews, associate professor of geography.
Students and faculty and using compelling maps, activities, lesson plans and educational resources provided by National Geographic Education and Children’s Programs.
Geography Awareness Week 2008 is part of Geography Action!, a program of National Geographic Education and Children’s Programs. Geography Action! is an annual program “designed to educate and excite youngsters about the world’s natural, cultural and historic treasures,” according to a National Geographic press release.
UNA students and faculty visited Brooks Elementary and Webster Elementary on Monday. They are at Prattville Intermediate School in Prattville today. They also plan to visit McBride Elementary, Rogers Elementary and Kilby later in the week.
Geography Awareness Week 2008 has received proclamations from Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, UNA President William G. Cale Jr., Muscle Shoals Mayor David Bradford, Prattville Mayor Jim Byard Jr. and Prattville Superintendent of Schools Larry Butler. The program will receive a proclamation from Florence Mayor Bobby Irons at 5 p.m. today.
