AQUILA THEATRE PRESENTS ‘THE COMEDY OF ERRORS’ AT UNA FEB. 3

December 15, 2008

See Shakespearean comedy like you’ve never seen it before

FLORENCE, Ala. — The internationally acclaimed Aquila Theatre Company will return to the University of North Alabama to present Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in Norton Auditorium. General-admission tickets, which are $15, or $5 for students, are available at the UNA Bookstore, the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, ColdWater Books and Pegasus Records and Tapes. Tickets will also be available at the door.

This is the seventh year the traveling drama production group will perform at UNA.

“This company is for people who think they are not going to like Shakespeare,” said Jayne Jackson, UNA events coordinator. “Shakespeare should not be stuffy, boring and over everyone’s heads. That’s not how the Bard intended it. Aquila makes the language so accessible, and they have such a musical and visible approach to the material that it just draws you in and keeps you there.”

Aquila’s production of “The Comedy of Errors,” directed by Peter Meineck, has been a massive hit for the company since its first incarnation in New York in 2000. Since then, the high-powered, vibrant production has delighted audiences at the La Jolla Playhouse, the LA Shakespeare Festival, European Shakespeare festivals and coast-to-coast in the United States.

The shrewd and inventive plot relates the story of two pairs of identical twins in the same household separated by a devastating shipwreck. But as the comedy unfolds, all is not what it seems. Shakespeare’s remarkable staging propels a glorious, farcical romp set in the ancient city of Ephesus.

Brilliant comedy abounds in this witty take of mistaken identity, assumed personas, hilarious machinations and whimsical family ties. Shakespeare expertly weaves these boisterously entertaining strands together, allowing audiences to stay one step ahead of his characters and laugh heartily at the outrageous results.

Aquila’s production at UNA is made possible by an endowment in memory of Albert S. Johnston, who was a member of the UNA English faculty.
