UNA Events Tackle Eating Disorders

Feb. 9, 2010

FLORENCE, Ala. – As eating disorders and obsession with physical perfection affect more and more people nationwide, the University of North Alabama is offering a series of events Feb. 23 and 25 as part of NEDAwareness (National Eating Disorders Awareness Week).

The presentations will begin with a screening of award-winning filmmaker Darryl Roberts’ “America the Beautiful.” In the film, Roberts goes on a five-year journey to unearth the origins and deadly risks of this nation’s quest for physical perfection. “America the Beautiful” will be screened at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 in the GUC Performance Center. A Q&A session will follow.

Individual screenings for disorder eating will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 in the GUC, room 206.

That evening at 6 in the GUC Performance Center, UNA faculty members Dr. Joyce McIntosh and Kathy Underwood will make a presentation entitled “Beauty and the Beast: A Look at Eating Disorders and Beyond.” McIntosh and Underwood teach in UNA’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Their talk will be followed by “‘ED’ – Before and After,” a presentation by 2009 UNA alumna Katie Rolf Terry.
