Students Host SGA Fountain 5-K Run To Support Endowed Scholarship

Apr. 2, 2012

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Student Government Association at the University of North Alabama will host a Sunset Fountain 5-K run April 14 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with proceeds from the event going toward SGA’s student-led endowed scholarship initiative.

SGA is the first student organization at UNA to create an endowed scholarship fund for future students. The group plans to raise $25,000 toward the fund during a five-year period, and the Sunset Fountain 5-K run is a major fundraising event that SGA hosts to bring in money for the scholarship.

“This is a scholarship that was started by students,” said John Ledgewood, SGA secretary and UNA senior. “We are working toward a goal of helping future students. We’re here because we care about UNA and we’re trying to build the pride.”

So far, SGA has raised $3,900 toward the endowed scholarship fund. Ledgewood said SGA raised approximately $1,000 last year during its first-annual 5-K run and hopes to bring in between $1,500 and $2,000 this year.

The 5-K run, which will begin and end at the Harrison Plaza fountain on campus, is $12 for early registration and $15 the day of the event. The race will begin at 7 p.m. T-shirts, food and water will be available to participants, according to Ledgewood.
