UNA Music and Theatre to Stage 'The Winter's Tale'

Mar. 8, 2013

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Department of Music and Theatre at the University of North Alabama will present its spring play, “The Winter’s Tale” by William Shakespeare, March 14-16 at 7:30 p.m. and March 17 at 2 p.m. in the George S. Lindsey Theatre.

As its name suggests, the play begins in the dead of winter. In the first act, Leontes, King of Sicilia, spirals into a deep rage of jealousy when he mistakenly suspects his wife, the beautiful Hermione, of having an affair with his childhood friend Polixenes, King of Bohemia. The first act delivers a message about the destructive nature of jealousy and the tragedy that accompanies extreme tyranny. In true tragicomedy style, the second act starts anew with the beauty of spring, a metaphor for the gift of resurrection, rebirth and redemption.

“The Winter’s Tale” will be directed by UNA theatre professor Charlton James.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students with valid student ID. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts or online at www.una.edu/music-theatre. A service fee will apply to tickets purchased online.
