FLORENCE, Ala. – The Shoals Symphony at UNA will present the first concert of the season, Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m., in Norton Auditorium.  This concert will also serve as the debut for Dr. Daniel Stevens, the new conductor and music director of the symphony.

Stevens also serves as an associate professor of music at UNA and the director of the Peery Center for Orchestral Studies. Stevens said that if interest in the Shoals Symphony is going to thrive, it’s imperative that the quality musicianship and work ethic continue to rise as well.

“As the Shoals Symphony association works diligently to increase revenue in a field that relies heavily on corporate and individual sponsorship, I seek to increase the number of quality string students on the UNA campus.  I am hopeful that the symphony orchestra can be featured first within the state and then be featured on tour within the region.  My hope is that from a growing string-student population, the orchestral program at UNA will call for more full-time string faculty,” said Stevens.

The Oct. 19 concert, titled Tragedy into Triumph, will feature Overture to Semiramide by Rossini, excerpts from Symphony No. 1--"The Lord of the Rings" by de Meij and Carmen Suites No. 1 & 2 by Bizet.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. To purchase season tickets, make donations, or learn more about this concert and the entire 2014-2015 season: una.edu/shoals-symphony
