FLORENCE, Ala. – Four University of North Alabama students have a little less to worry about this school year thanks to the generosity of the Mauldin Family and Bank Independent.   Officials with Bank Independent and UNA recognized the four recipients of the Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarships at a ceremony Tuesday afternoon.  The scholarships are in honor of Edward Fennel Mauldin, the bank’s late chairman and father of current Bank Independent President, Macke Mauldin.

Two of the four scholarship recipients are accepting the scholarship for the first time, while the other two are second and third-year recipients.  The four scholarship recipients are: Benjamin “Ben” Ish, a freshman finance major from Rogersville and first-year Mauldin Scholarship recipient; Brittany Michael, a sophomore political science/legal studies major from Florence and second-year Mauldin Scholarship recipient; Logan Heflin, a junior nursing major from Florence and third-year Mauldin Scholarship recipient; and David “Drew” Fisher, a junior HPER major from Florence and first-year Mauldin Scholarship recipient.

This is the fifth year that the Mauldin family has awarded the scholarships.  With the addition of a fourth scholarship this year, the Mauldin family is one step closer to their goal of five concurrent, annual, renewable scholarships as of 2016.  Once the goal is completed, the scholarships will benefit a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior and fifth-year student at UNA.

The four recipients were on hand for the announcement Tuesday at the Bank Independent offices on Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals.  Macke Mauldin, president of Bank Independent, honored his late father when speaking about the current recipients.

“We know that our dad would be very proud to see these four extraordinary students here today. He believed that any exposure to college was better than none, and he was a strong supporter of the University of North Alabama.  He shared UNA’s mission to educate the young people in our area and was always interested in making sure his friends and neighbors had the opportunity for post-secondary education,” Mauldin said.
