FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama Department of Music & Theatre, in conjunction with the Shoals Symphony Association and the Peery Center for Orchestral Studies, will host the first-ever UNA Honor Orchestra weekend Jan. 9-10, 2015.
“It is important to recognize the talented string students found in the state of Alabama and in our region,” said Dr. Daniel Stevens, artistic director and conductor of the Shoals Symphony at UNA.
And the importance of recognizing these students goes beyond the performance hall.
“Any time we can bring bright, academically rigorous, gifted students to the UNA campus, we are seizing opportunities for the UNA campus to grow,” he said.
The weekend will culminate with the UNA Honor Orchestra Concert on Jan. 10, at 7 p.m., in Norton Auditorium. The concert will feature the Shoals Symphony at UNA and the UNA Honor Orchestra participants.
“The hour-long concert will include four exciting works for the honor students alone, ‘Seigfried Idyll’ performed by the Shoals Symphony at UNA and two pieces with the entire cast of more than 100 musicians,” said Stevens.
He promised the final number, “Warrior Legacy,” is a “Batman/Superman/Pirates of the Caribbean type of adventure,” concertgoers will not want to miss.
Tickets for the concert are $5 and are available at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts or at the door. For more information: the UNA Department of Music and Theatre at 256-765-5122 or www.una.edu/shoals-symphony.
