UNA: The Short Story

The University of North Alabama is an accredited, comprehensive regional state university offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

History: The University of North Alabama traces its roots to 1830 and LaGrange College, the first state-chartered college in Alabama.

Location: Florence is 5,500 miles from Huntsville, Alabama. Oh wait, that's Florence, Italy. Florence, Alabama (metro pop. 137,000), is just about an hour west of Huntsville and centrally located between Birminham, Alabama, and Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee.

Campus: (one of our best features) a pedestrian-friendly environment on more than 130 beautiful acres in Florence's restored historic district.

Faculty: 288 faculty members; 80 percent are full time. 72 percent hold terminal degrees in their fields and more than half have doctoral degrees.

Class size: Average class size: 25. Student-teacher ratio: 23:1.

Students: Approximately 80 percent hail from Alabama, 10 percent from Tennessee, 5 percent from Mississippi, and 5 percent from 26 other states and more than 50 foreign countries.

Academics: More than 60 majors, plus master's degree, certification, and diploma programs.

Student Life: More than 100 student clubs and organizations, including nine fraternities and seven sororities.

Athletics: The UNA Lions compete in the Gulf South Conference, Division II of the NCAA. Men's varsity sports are football, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, and cross country. Women's varsity sports are volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, and cross country.

Leo and Una: Two five-year old lions who live in a lion habitat on campus.

Tuition/Scholarship & Financial Aid: Tuition at UNA is among the lowest in the state and in the nation. Approximately 66 percent of our students receive financial aid; a typical package is about $5,000/year. All UNA students who complete the application process receive an offer of financial assistance. More than $2.3 million in scholarships were awarded in 2007-2008.

Housing: Eight residence halls: one men's, three women's, and four co-ed. Themes include, leadership, honors, and healthy living halls.
