Undergraduate Student Excellence: Chuck Chiriaco

UNA Undergraduate Student Chuck ChiriacoChuck Chiriaco is pursuing a Bachelors in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics and expects to graduate in May 2016. After graduation, his plans, though maybe a little tongue-in-cheek, are to “Save the world.”

“I am from Gadsden, Alabama,” he said, “I chose to attend the University of North Alabama because it was extremely student-centered. The instructors here are top notch and truly care that we get a good education.”

Chuck is in the Honors Program and serves as a member of the Navigator program, which is made up of a group of both international and domestic students who act as student ambassadors and mentors for the international student body. He’s also a College of Business Ambassador and involved with the Theatre Program. He has so far maintained a 4.0 grade average - “We’ll see how long that lasts,” he said - and is very excited about having saved enough money to study abroad in Tanzania.

He counts his Navigator boss Joy Mallard, Dr. James Jerkins in the Computer Science department, Dr. Janet Jenkins, also a Computer Science professor, among his mentors and strongest influences at UNA. “Why?” he said, “Because they’re awesome!” He enjoys interacting with people and spending time with friends in his spare time. He loves acting in plays when he can and likes watching movies in theaters.

“I like the fact that my superiors are also my mentors at UNA,” he said. “They want what is best for me. They teach me that as long as I put in the work required, they will be there for assistance and guidance if needed.”
