ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Mack Cornwell
Mack Cornwell obtained a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in May of 2015. After shifting between a few different majors during his time at UNA, Interdisciplinary Studies became the perfect fit. It allowed him to self-design his degree and focus around his specific interests, such as International Business, Fashion, and Merchandising.
During his first year at UNA, Mack was driven to start-up his own business: Cornwell Properties. Mack noticed how international students were often taken advantage of when renting apartments. His compassion for international students and his entrepreneurial mindset created his company that continues to invest, rent, and renovate properties here in Florence, Alabama.
During his senior year at UNA, Cornwell was offered a full scholarship by Tianjin Foreign Studies University in Tianjin City, China. Cornwell accepted the scholarship and moved to China to study international business management and Chinese language. He also completed his UNA degree online while in China.
Although offered a job in the United States with a company he was working with in China, Mack decided to join the start-up world. He was a part of a team that established Feetz Shoes, a 3D shoe printing company that provides custom fit footwear. The company was bought out by Sun Microsystems/Khosla Ventures and is still successfully manufacturing personalized shoes today.
Cornwell currently continues to manage Cornwell Properties, his first start up, and has created an investing group named Cornwell Consultant. The company invests in start-ups around the world—ranging from Israel to California to here in Florence. Cornwell is also currently working with Ark Labs, an innovative company that has created a home water monitoring device that can be controlled through a mobile device, alerts the home owner of any abnormal water flow, and can shut off the homes water supply if a leak has occurred.
Mack is extremely thankful to UNA for providing him opportunities to find the career he always wanted. “UNA was the magnifying force that helped my career grow,” Mack says. The best thing about Mack’s diverse and emergent career? He has the opportunity to travel. “I get to go all over the world,” he says. Mack travels 50% of his time and resides in Florence for the other 50%.
“UNA was a very powerful asset for me,” Mack states. From the international population at UNA to the option of Interdisciplinary Studies as a major, Mack has taken full advantage of the opportunities that UNA holds for both its students and Alumni.
