Johnson graduated from the directing program at the AFI Conservatory where he received a Tom Yoda scholarship and the Bridges/Larson Directing Award for his thesis film FLOTSAM. His first feature HUNKY DORY was selected for IFP's 2015 Narrative Film Lab; won a special jury award at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival; the Grand Jury Award at the Atlanta Film Festival; and the Audience Award at the Nashville Film Festival, Naples Film Festival, and American Film Festival. His second feature film SAVAGE YOUTH premiered at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival, was selected for the Venice Film Festival's Biennale College Cinema program and won the Grand Jury Award at the 2018 Florida Film Festival. His feature films and shorts have screened and won awards at over 75 international film festivals.
