What is the Honors Program?
The Honors Program is an academic curriculum of coursework and a capstone project, co-curricular activities designed to enrich the mind, a home in Lafayette Hall, and a group of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to a challenging and rewarding college experience.
What are the criteria for acceptance?
The Honors Program examines applications in five areas: GPA, standardized test scores, demonstrated leadership, service to the community, and writing ability.
Do I have to apply separately for Honors Program Scholarships?
No, we take care of that for you, but you must apply for other UNA scholarships.
Are there any costs associated with the Program?
No, the Honors Program pays for all activities and awards scholarships to all its members.
Am I required to live in Lafayette?
No, students in the Honors Program may live wherever they wish, but we strongly recommend Lafayette at least for the first year. There is a direct correlation between success in college (and in the Program) and living in Lafayette.
Do I need to apply for Housing if I want to live in Lafayette?
Yes, you must complete the application form available from Housing and include a Housing deposit to reserve a space in Lafayette.
Does the Honors Program accept transfers?
Yes, we consider transfer applicants on a case by case basis. If you are considering transferring to UNA and are interested in the Honors Program, you should apply as soon as possible.
Will all my classes be Honors courses?
No, Honors students take a mix of Honors and regular courses. Students may also contract regular courses for Honors credit.
What differentiates an Honors course from a regular course?
Typically, Honors courses have smaller enrollments (15 or fewer), are oriented toward discussion rather than lecture, and involve a greater emphasis on writing and presentations for the grade.
Can I participate in other activities and be in the Honors Program?
Absolutely, we want you to be fully involved in campus life. Honors students participate in varsity athletics, marching band, student government, campus ministries, Greek life, and other programs too numerous to mention.
