How Assignments Are Prioritized

UNA makes residence hall assignments based on the day we receive your submitted application - that includes completing the application & contract, and submitting the $150 application fee. Assignments are then made based on preference and availability, in the following order:

1) Your preferred residence hall.

2) Specific, mutual roommate request.

3) Your preferred room type (double, single, etc.)

4) Roommate matching questions answered within your housing application.

Things To Know

Application Status & Deadline: You must complete your residence hall application, pay the non-refundable application fee, agree to the contract, and fully submit it in order to receive an assignment. There is no deadline to submit an application, but we make assignments based on the date/time of your fully submitted application per the schedule listed above. It is important to know that our halls fill very quickly and you are encouraged to submit an application early in order to receive your preferred assignment. For example, single rooms are often claimed by students applying prior to February 1st. It is not uncommon for freshmen female assignments in Mattielou and Olive to be filled by early March.

Assignment Changes: We are unable to make any changes to assignments once they are distributed. This includes changing your roommate, room, hall, etc. We do hold an open room change process the second week after classes begin if you would like to request a modification to your assignment. All approved room changes are dependent on space and availability.

Freshmen Residency Requirement: Freshmen are required to live on campus for one academic year. Students commuting from the home of a legal parent/guardian or eligible for other exemption reasons must complete an Exemption Form and submit to Housing & Residence Life. There is no deadline to submit an exemption form, but you are encouraged to do so upon admission. For more information and access to the Exemption Form, please click HERE

Please note that by submitting the application and contract you are agreeing to a BINDING LEGAL DOCUMENT. This contract can only be breached due to a severe change in financial status or medical need that cannot be accommodated in the residence halls.  Please be sure that you read and fully understand all portions of the application and contract before submitting it.

Roommate Matching / Requests

You may begin searching for and submitting roommate requests on May 1st. The roommate request process will conclude on June 20th. We cannot accept specific roommate requests after this date. Applications submitted after June 20th will be assigned a roommate based on lifestyle preferences as indicated on the initial application.

To Request A Specific Roommate:

  1. Sign into the Residence application system.
  2. Select Term / Fall 2017.
  3. Choose "Find Someone You Know"
  4. Enter that resident's roommate code (found at the top righthand corner of the application). Send invite.
  5. That person may accept or decline your request.
  6. Verify that your match has occurred in the Roommate Group box (right side of screen). You should only select one individual.

To Request A Roommate Based On Preferences:

  1. Sign into the Residence application system.
  2. Select Term / Fall 2017.
  3. Choose "Search Resident Profiles".
  4. Select "Change Search Filters"
  5. Answer the questions (referred to as filters) that are most important to you in a living situation and roommate match.
  6. Submit. Housing & Residence Life will match you based on the criteria you submitted.

Roommate Matching/Request Tips:

  • Choose the roommate filters that are most important to you! This will help you identify your ideal roommate. You are not required to answer every question - answer too few and you are less likely to find someone you will really enjoy living with - answer too many and you will have less options to choose from.
  • We highly recommend that each student complete their own profile within the application as this will help match you with residents that are most compatible. Also, consider how your habits might change once you've arrived on campus. Do you think you'll stay up late and schedule your classes after 10am? If so, make sure you answer those questions accordingly!
  • You may customize your message when you contact other residents and request that someone be your roommate. Make sure to communicate openly and honestly with your prospective roommate.
  • UNA makes residence hall assignments based on the day we receive your submitted application - that includes completing the application & contract, and submitting the $150 application fee. Assignments are then made based on preference and availability, in the following order:

1) Your preferred residence hall.

2) Specific, mutual roommate request.

3) Your preferred room type (double, single, etc.)

4) Roommate matching questions answered within your housing application.

Example: You submitted an application that said you want to live in a new freshman residence hall - Mattielou/Olive. (Remember, we make assignments based on the date you submitted a completed application/contract). Now you have chosen a roommate for the year that said they want to live in a traditional freshman residence hall - Rivers. You will be assigned to Mattielou/Olive and your desired roommate will be placed in Rivers because the preferred residence hall takes precedence.

Meal Plan Notice

Please note that if this your first time living in a UNA residence hall, then you must purchase a meal plan. When you sign the Residence Hall Contract, you are agreeing to a mandatory meal plan if you live in Rivers, Lafayette, Mattielou, Olive, Hawthorne, or Covington Hall.

The requirement is for two regular semesters (Fall and Spring). If you do not select a plan, then the Business Office will select and charge you for the meal plan.

You may order a meal plan on-line through your UNA Portal account. Or, if on campus, visit the cashier's window in Bibb Graves Hall. Meal plan prices are subject to change. Visit Dining Services for more information.
