Dr. David M. McCullough is currently Professor of Music in the Department of Music at the University of North Alabama where he teaches horn, conducting, and music history and music education coursework.  Dr. McCullough joined the UNA faculty in 2008 as Department Chair and served in that position through 2016.

Prior to UNA, Dr. McCullough served for 22 years as a college band director; as Director of Bands at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, KY (1991-2008); and as Director of Bands at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, GA (1981-1986).  He has the distinction of having founded the marching bands at both West Georgia (1982) and Campbellsville (1992).  In addition, Dr. McCullough served as Band Director at Madison County High School in Gurley, AL (1975-1978). 

Dr. McCullough is active as a conductor, performer, clinician and adjudicator within his areas of specialty, and has presented and performed in recent years at the Alabama Music Educators Association annual conferences.  He has twice served as quest conductor of the Campbellsville University Honor Band (2014, 2020), and served four times as conductor of the Kentucky Baptist All-State Youth Orchestra (2000, 2003, 2007, and 2014).  In addition, Dr. McCullough is founder of the National Civil War Band Festival and directed the 2000 and 2003 sessions of the NCWBF held on the campus of Campbellsville University, which featured Dr. Frederick Fennel as Special Guest Conductor.

Dr. McCullough’s honors include his selection by the Campbellsville University Board of Advisors as the University’s 1994 Distinguished Professor for Academic Excellence, his selection by the Kentucky Music Educators Association as the 1996 College/University “Teacher of the Year” and his selection in 2000 to the Robert E. Lee High School (Montgomery, AL) Hall of Fame.   In addition, Dr. McCullough was the recipient of the 2020-2021 Outstanding Senior Faculty award presented by the UNA College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering. 

David McCullough is a native of Montgomery, Alabama and holds the B.S. and M.Ed. degrees in music education from Auburn University (1974, 1975), the Master of Music degree in music performance (horn) from The Florida State University (1980), and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music performance (horn) from the University of Georgia (1990).
