MARCH 10, 2013

Based on preliminary information, here is what The University of North Alabama knows about an incident that was reported this past weekend:

UNA Police were called to ECM Hospital the morning of March 10, 2013, at approximately 6:30 a.m. to check on the well-being of a student who was in the emergency room. The female student who lives on the 3rd floor of Rivers Hall was allegedly taken to the 6th floor of Rivers Hall at sometime during the evening hours of March 9, by a suspect in the case and joined by several other males who had non-consensual sex with the victim.

Any time there is a possibility that a sexual assault has occurred at the University, the UNA Police Sexual Assault Investigator, and a Rape Response Advocate are notified.  They responded to ECM and the residential halls immediately to begin a follow-up investigation.

Investigators have talked with the student.  She met an individual on the elevator in Rivers Hall, late on Saturday evening, and accompanied him to a room on the 6th floor.  Four individuals have been identified, three are UNA students, and interviewed along with several witnesses.  The investigation is ongoing, and investigators are collecting and evaluating all available information and evidence.

Crimes against persons are rare on the UNA campus. The University of North Alabama spends significant time and resources to help students learn how to make informed and healthy decisions that will enhance their personal security and well-being. Our goal is to help students learn the life-skills they need now and for a lifetime. Crime prevention information is provided online at www.una.edu/police
