Attention History Buffs: UNA Hosts Scholarship Competition Next Week

Feb. 4, 2010

FLORENCE, Ala. – Local high school history buffs are brushing up on their trivia knowledge this week in preparation for the Feb. 12 Tennessee Valley Historical Society History Scholarship Competition. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University of North Alabama’s Guillot University Center. Lunch will be provided by the UNA Honors Program.

The competition will award three UNA scholarships. A $750 and $500 scholarship will be presented to the top two seniors, while a $250 scholarship is presented to the top junior. The junior-senior scholarship competition will include a written test on U.S. and world history.

Participants will also be included in a Big Brain contest, an oral team competition open to all high-school-age students, grades 9-12. The top three teams will be awarded plaques to recognize their achievements. However, students do not have to come with a team or be affiliated with a local high school to participate.

In addition to the competitions, student participants will receive a UNA campus tour as well as a demonstration exercise by the students of UNA’s nationally recognized Mock Trial program.

To register, contact the UNA Department of History and Political Science at 256-765-4306 or mfhickman@una.edu.
