Communications in Disaster Relief: UNA Collects Radios to Aid in Phil Campbell Recovery

May. 2, 2011

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama Department of Communications is responding to a communications challenge hampering the Phil Campbell tornado recovery efforts. With no electrical power and almost non-existent cell-phone coverage in the Phil Campbell area, communication between volunteers and residents is a problem. Beginning today, a live remote broadcast is airing 24-7 on AM 1500 to enable residents and volunteers to know what is going on and how to help. Between now and Friday, the UNA Department of Communications is collecting AM/FM radios and batteries to donate to the effort. AA batteries and new or used, battery- or solar-powered radios may be donated to the communications department, located in the Communications Department on N. Pine Street, across from Kilby Laboratory School on the UNA campus. Financial donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase new radios for the effort.
