George Lindsey UNA Film Festival Issues Call for Entries for 2014 Competition

FLORENCE, Ala. – The George Lindsey UNA Film Festival has issued its official call for entries for the 17th annual competition.
The 2014 festival – which welcomes works by local, national and international filmmakers – will take place March 6-8 at the University of North Alabama. The festival was founded in 1998 by beloved actor, comedian and entertainer George Lindsey (1928-2012), who established the competition as a showcase for student and professional filmmakers.
Festival entries can be submitted through Withoutabox.com, an online application service for film festivals. Early deadline for Lindsey submissions is July 1, followed by the regular deadline on Aug. 1. The festival also offers a late deadline of Sept. 1, with an extended deadline set for Oct. 1. The cost for entering the festival increases with each successive deadline.
Festival prizes include $500 for the winner in each competitive category. A $2,000 prize is presented to the winner of the Clyde “Sappo” Black/Sweet Home Alabama Award, honoring the Best of State entry filmed in Alabama. Special jury honors will also be awarded for Best of Show, Best Story, Best Directing, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Editing, Best Sound Design and Best Score, plus an Audience Choice selections.
In its 16-year history, the Lindsey festival has also welcomed special guests ranging from Oscar winners Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade,” “Monster’s Ball”) and Ernest Borgnine (“Marty,” “The Wild Bunch”) and fellow actors Michael Rooker (“The Walking Dead,” “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer”), Lee Majors (“The Six Million-Dollar Man,” “The Big Valley”), Lucas Black (“Get Low,” “42”) and Rance Howard (“Ed Wood,” “A Beautiful Mind”) to “Back to the Future” writer-producer Bob Gale and two cast members from that film, James Tolkan and Claudia Wells.
In his own career, Lindsey studied at the American Theatre Wing and performed on Broadway before earning his signature role as Goober Pyle on the classic television sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show” and its spinoff series, “Mayberry R.F.D.” He played memorable character roles on “The Twilight Zone,” “The Rifleman,” “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” “Gunsmoke” and “M*A*S*H” and provided colorful voiceovers for the classic Disney animated features “The Aristocats,” “Robin Hood” and “The Rescuers.”
Lindsey also hosted the award-winning Turner South series “Liars & Legends” and appeared in the feature films “Ensign Pulver,” “Snowball Express,” “Charley and the Angel,” “Treasure of Matecumbe,” “Cannonball Run II,” “Take This Job and Shove It” and “When I Find the Ocean.”
