Faculty Commencement Instructions

Commencement ceremonies are held in Flowers Hall on the published date each fall and spring semester.  The first ceremony begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. and the second ceremony at 2:00 p.m.  Below are further details regarding faculty lineup and marching instructions.

Ceremony 1

The President’s party and faculty assemble by 9:50 a.m. in the north (right) hallway of Flowers Hall. Two lines are formed: the left line led by the President and the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences; the right line led by the Provost and the faculty of the Anderson College of Nursing, and Collier Library.  The Registrar, Board of Trustees, President’s Executive Council, and officers of the Administration will be distributed evenly between the two lines immediately following the President or Provost.

Ceremony 2

The President’s party and faculty assemble by 1:50 p.m. in the north (right) hallway of Flowers Hall. Two lines are formed: the left line led by the President and the faculty of the College of Business; the right line led by the Provost, and the faculty of the College of Education and Human Sciences. The Registrar, Board of Trustees, President’s Executive Council, and officers of the Administration will be distributed evenly between the two lines immediately following the President or Provost.

The marshals will lead these lines through the left and right doors into the gymnasium. The members of the President’s party will proceed directly to the stage. The marshals will direct faculty into the first four rows of chairs: right line into rows one and three and left line into rows two and four. Faculty should respect the solemnity and dignity of the commencement ceremony and serve as examples of proper decorum.

Following the Alma Mater, there will be a recessional involving the President’s party and faculty. As the recessional music begins, the President’s party will lead off, followed by the faculty as directed by the marshals. Students do not participate in the recessional but will remain standing.
