Special Interest


African Student Organization
The purpose of the African Student Organization is to promote unity, cooperation, educational and cultural goals for African students at UNA. It promotes the interests of African students at UNA and identifies and presents the needs and views of the African students at UNA. Finally, it promotes the image of and creates awareness about Africa in the community by organizing various activities and events.

Alpha Delta Chi
Alpha Delta Chi exists to make members more steadfast in their Christian life, in their relationship with one another, and in their studies.  Its purpose is to strengthen the spiritual lives and testimonies of the members, to promote higher scholastic standards among the members, and to provide social fellowship among the university students living the Christian life and active in Christ’s service.

Black Student Alliance
The purpose of the Black Student Alliance is to promote unity and harmony among students at the University; to promote cultural awareness; to encourage participation in University events; and to provide leadership opportunities to act as a catalyst in involving the membership in the mainstream of campus leadership. Membership is open to all UNA students, without regard to race, creed, color or national origin.

Chinese Student Organization
The purpose of this organization is to promote Chinese culture, promotes active participation of Chinese speaking students on campus and community activities, and birth friendships.

College Democrats
College Democrats, formerly known as Young Democrats of America, is open to those who want to stimulate their interests in governmental affairs.  Its purpose it to increase efficiency of popular government, to foster and perpetuate the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party, to recruit new members for the Democratic Party, to help acquaint voters with the issues and the candidates, and to provide for our people the highest degree of justice, social welfare, and happiness.

College Republicans
The College Republicans promote, educate and interest students in the ideals of the Republican Party. The organization fosters an interest in democratic rights, while stressing patriotism and the development of more conscientious citizens. Any student who is interested in politics and the Republican party is welcome to become a member. There are annual dues for membership.

Diorama
Published by a staff of students, the university yearbook invites any interested student enrolled at UNA to be on the Diorama staff. Writers, layout artists, photographers and graphic artists, as well as interested journalists, may visit the Student Publications House(765-4426) for more details.

Fashion Forum
Purpose of Fashion Forum is to broaden fashion merchandising and interior design students’ knowledge base by means of educational speakers; to broaden students’ awareness of community service through charity work; and to offer financial assistance to qualified students through a scholarship fund. For information regarding membership, contact the Human Environmental Sciences Department. Jane Wilson is the advisor for the group.

The Flor-Ala
The campus newspaper is published every Thursday of the fall and spring semesters except during holidays and exam periods. The Flor-Ala invites interested students to work on staff as reporters, editors, photographers, or graphic artists. Students wishing to lend their talents to the publication of the campus paper should contact The Flor-Ala at 765-4226.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)
The goal of GSA is to promote mutually supportive relationships among all students and members of the surrounding community in the interest of advancing campus and community diversity. GSA believes that Florence and UNA are strengthened by the diversity of people and that each person has worth and should be treated with dignity and respect.

Global Frienship Organization (GFO)
The purpose of the GFO is to integrate the International community in Florence, to develop the awareness about global issues and different cultures, and help international students to adjust to American culture and life style without facing any major problems. Membership is limited to UNA students, faculty and staff members; however, Executive Committee may offer ‘Associate membership’ to non-faculty, non-staff and non-student people. Members of this organization are free to leave and disassociate without fear of retribution and harassment. Membership requires an annual due, which is determined by the Executive Committee. www.gfouna.org

Indian Student Organization
The main goal of this organization is to behave as a global group that will be a representative of all the Indian students on the UNA campus.  It represents all present and future Indian students of UNA.  It provides a broader scope for a cultural understanding and the exchange of ideas between the people of India and others.

Japanese Global Network
The purpose is to integrate the Japanese community in the Shoals Area, to develop the awareness of the contemporary Japanese World and its culture, and to promote Japan.  Membership is limited to UNA students; however, faculty, staff student spouses, and community members may be associate members.

Japanese University Meal Project (JUMP) - The purpose is to assist students to become familiar with Japanese healthy food culture to a healthy life eating habit and to promote a variety of Japanese meals at the UNA cafeteria.

Lion Paws Dance Team
The Lion Paws Dance Team is a student organization open to UNA students and high school seniors who will be attending UNA in the Fall. Tryouts for this prestigious team are held in the Spring. Members perform for various University and community events. Members must be willing to devote time to practice sessions, fund-raising events, and personal appearances. The team will also compete in local, regional and national dance team competitions. For information on tryouts, call advisor Angela Childree Green.

North Alabama Bass Fishing Team (UNA TUNA) – The purpose is to give UNA students the opportunity to engage in Bass Fishing and to participate in Collegiate Bass Fishing Tournaments.

Outdoor Recreation Club
This organization was to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of outdoor recreation through various forms of outdoor activities and programs designed around student interests.

Rho Alpha
The purpose of this organization is to provide large scale programming to on campus residents. It also provides staff development opportunities for the Resident Assistants on the UNA campus.

Society to Promote Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth (SPIC-MACAY) – The purpose is to promote Classical Indian Music and Culture, to facilitate the exchange of traditional  Indian values and to generate awareness amongst the youth about the rich cultural traditions and heritage of India.

Student Alumni Association
The purpose of this organization is to promote school spirit, improve campus community, provide networking opportunities, and increase interaction between students.

Student Publications
Student Publications is responsible for the student produced Diorama and The Flor-Ala, UNA's yearbook and newspaper.

Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
The purpose of SAAC is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by developing student-athlete leadership skills, promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and by fostering a positive student-athlete image on the UNA campus, within the community and on the state and national level.

Turkish Association
The purpose of the Turkish Association is to integrate the Turkish community in Florence, to develop the awareness of the comtemporary Turkish world and its culture, and to promote the country of Turkey.

UNA Ballroom and Social Dance Club - The purpose of this organization is to expose students to various types of ballroom and social dances. All students are invited to be a part of this organization and to learn new dances.

UNA Film and Digital Media Productions - The purpose of F&DMP is to educate the community about Film and Digital Media Productions and to home the skills of student members, through research and execution of current media related articles. This society shares the knowledge they gain through production work that benefits the university community with the intention of increasing awareness, as well as, giving participants a truly unique experience. The ideal member is someone interested in the art of film and digital media and are willing to give back of the knowledge they obtain in this art.

UNA Lion Ultimate Club - The purpose of this club is to introduce, teach, promote, and encourage participation in the sport of Ultimate in all its aspects, within UNA and the community. It will ensure Ultimate is played according to the rules of the sport and in accordance with the Spirit of the Game. The club is open to anyone willing and able to participate and contribute to the purpose of the club.

UNA Nepali Student Organization - The purpose of this organization is to develop leadership skills among Nepali and other international students, to enhance intercultural experience, to help international students adapt with the UNA Student Life and the surrounding communities, to expand diversity on campus, and promote UNA to the world.

UNA Spanish Club -  To further the study of the Spanish speaking language, culture and customs to UNA students.

University Players - Students who participate in university plays and theatrical performances are recognized through the University Players. These students provide cultural enrichment to the community and the campus with live stage entertainment. Membership in the organization is open to students engaged in university productions. Word of Mouth (WOM) - The purpose of WOM is to provide a positive atmosphere for creative expression and to promote leadership abilities and skills.
