Jack Karnes graduated from Springdale High School in 1996, received the Dwight Collins Memorial Golf Scholarship from Springdale Country Club in Springdale, Arkansas. Jack accepted a golf scholarship from the University of North Alabama, where he was later named to the All-Academic Team of the Gulf South Conference with a 3.81 GPA in the College of Business and was member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Jack had two impactful years at UNA, until his untimely death on September 20th, 1998.

In 1999, the UNA Alumni Association Homecoming Golf Tournament was renamed in Jack's memory and is now known as The Jack Karnes Memorial Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament aid in underwriting the Fifth Year Scholarship Program for deserving student athletes. The purpose of the Fifth Year Scholarship is to provide continued scholarship support for student-athletes whose athletic eligibility has expired but who have not yet completed their degree requirements.
