college of education

Since the University of North Alabama was restructured as the south's first coeducational state teacher's college in 1872, UNA's College of Education has had a long and storied tradition. The College of Education is nationally recognized and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Because of this accreditation, teacher education graduates are able to compete successfully for teaching positions in Alabama and in all other states.

Students majoring in teacher education must fulfill initial requirements for the teacher education program, in addition to normal University admission requirements. These include maintaining a minimum grade point average, passing the Content Mastery Examination for Educators and completing other mandated requirements.

Exciting non-certification programs are available in the Departments of Human Environmental Sciences and Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

There are a number of outstanding student organizations in the College of Education which provide additional opportunities for students to develop their skills.

Kilby Laboratory School, the only laboratory school directly affiliated with a university in the State of Alabama, and the Child Development Center are an integral part of the College of Education programs.

The Education Research and Inservice Center provides outstanding professional development opportunities for area educators.

The College of Education also offers a number of master's degree programs in both certification and non-certification areas.
