Donna JacobsOn behalf of the faculty and staff of the UNA College of Education, I am pleased to welcome you to our website.  The College of Education offers a wide range of courses and programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist levels.  Specific course and program information is accessible on this website through each of the five academic departments: Counselor Education; Elementary Education; Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Human Environmental Sciences; and Secondary Education. 

UNA College of Education Undergraduate Programs

UNA offers undergraduate programs that lead to Alabama Professional Educator Certification in the following teaching fields:  biology, business/marketing, chemistry, early childhood,  elementary , English for speakers of other languages, English language arts, family and consumer sciences, French, geography, German, history, mathematics, music-choral, music-instrumental, physical education, physics, science (general), social science (general), Spanish, and visual arts. 

The College of Education offers undergraduate non-teaching majors/concentrations in exercise science, fitness management, health promotion, recreation, and sport management  in the Department of Health , Physical Education and Recreation; and child development, culinary arts, foods and nutrition, interior design, and merchandising in the Department of Human Environmental  Sciences. 

UNA College of Education Graduate Programs

UNA offers master’s programs that lead to Alabama Professional Educator Certification in the following teaching fields and instructional support areas: biology, business/marketing, chemistry, collaborative teacher (special education), elementary, English for speakers of other languages, English language arts, geography, history, instructional leadership, mathematics, music-choral, music-instrumental, physical education, school counseling, science (general), and social science (general).   UNA offers the Education Specialist degree program that leads to certification in Educational Administration.  In addition, non-certification programs in community counseling and health and human performance are offered at the master’s level. 

Most undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education are recognized by state and/or national accreditation agencies.  Please refer to the accreditation section of the COE website for specific information regarding program accreditations and endorsements.

In addition to the UNA course and program offerings, we are pleased to announce our recent partnership with the University of Alabama that will bring their Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in instructional leadership to the UNA campus beginning fall 2010.  Click here for more information regarding the UNA Cohort of the University of Alabama Ed.D. program.

Current UNA students and esteemed alumni reflect our commitment to excellence.  The College of Education continuous improvement process includes ongoing review of the curriculum to ensure our graduates have the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions to meet the evolving needs of the various professions of our graduates.  

Other entities associated with the College of Education include the Kilby Laboratory School  which is the only laboratory school directly affiliated with a university in the State of Alabama.  Located on the UNA campus, Kilby serves students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

The Child Development Center (CDC) is also located on the UNA campus and provides programs for three-and four-year –old children.   The CDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a national voluntary accreditation system of professional standards for early childhood education programs.

The Education Research and Inservice Center is located on the UNA East Campus and serves fourteen school districts in six surrounding counties in north Alabama. The purpose of the Inservice Center is to provide high quality professional development opportunities to classroom teachers, administrators, and support personnel within our service area.
