Programs

The University of North Alabama Center for Writing Excellence provides support for writing, reading, and critical thinking activities for the university community.  In addition to tutorial support and resources for students, we also support undergraduate research and professional development.  For faculty, we provide professional development opportunities and teaching support.  The Center also offers community writing workshops and supports the development of writing centers at the high school level.

University Writing Center

The University Writing Center offers individual or group tutorials with experienced tutors who are also fellow students.  We provide writing support for any homework paper in any course, in any major, for the entire duration of a student’s  UNA career.  We even help with resumes, cover letters, and application essays.

Topics we cover include:
  • Writing Process (Brainstorming / Invention, Drafting, Revision, Editing)
  • Higher Order Concerns (Audience, Purpose, Thesis, Organization, Development, Introduction, Conclusion)
  • Lower Order Concerns (Grammar, Mechanics, Punctuation, Spelling)
  • Style (Especially MLA and APA, but we will also help with Chicago, AP, and CSE style).
  • Research (Quantitative and Qualitative structure and format, research processes, developing argument)
Beyond tutorials, the UWC also offers workshops — for classes, student organizations, and even as residence halls programs.  Presentations can cover any writing issue, from APA Style to qualitative research formats, and from revision practices to collaborative strategies.

Tutor applications are accepted throughout the year.  Successful completion of Composition I and II with at least a grade of B is required, as is a recent writing sample and a faculty recommendation.  See the Center website (www.una.edu/writingcenter) for more information. To join a group or to start your own, e-mail the director; you will be put in contact with our Student Groups Coordinator.

Academic-Athletic Mentoring Program

The CWE is proud to coordinate the UNA Athletic Department’s Academic Athletic Mentoring Program.  In this program, academic coaches (generally non-traditional students with GPAs above a 3.2) provide small group peer support for Freshman and at-risk athletes.  This includes helping them learn about then various offices on campus, helping them develop study skills, and helping them plan and budget their time and resources.

Academic coaches do not have to be good writers, but they do need good people skills, good study habits, and a firm understanding of how the university system works.  Interested applicants should visit the AAMP link on the CWE website (www.una.edu/writingcenter) for an application.

Professional Development in Writing Across the Curriculum & Writing in the Disciplines (WAC /WID)

The Center for Writing Excellence is also the home of Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing in the Disciplines Professional Development Workshops and support for Faculty.

Workshops are monthly presentations and discussions on writing issues that may appear in writing intensive and research courses.   Topics have included rubric design, the role of audience in assignments, and strategies for collaborative writing.  Faculty to who cannot attend the monthly meetings can find information on the WAC/WID page of the Center website (www.una.edu/writingcenter).  In addition, WAC/WID presentations can be offered for small groups of faculty and in department meetings by request.  Individual consultation is also available upon request.

Community Programs

The UNA Center for Writing Excellence is dedicated to community outreach programs that help increase the writing and literacy skills and interests of the community, especially those of teenage and young adult populations. At present, the UNA Center for Writing Excellence has two community programs commitments.  First, the CWE offers writing workshops in conjunction with the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.  Students and faculty who are interested in the teaching of writing and who would like to assist in these workshops are welcome to join.  The CWE has also teamed up with the Florence High School English Department to create a writing center at the high school.  Discussion is underway to integrate English Education observation hours into this program through volunteer tutoring.
