Deshler Student Wins Earth Day Poetry Competition

Mar. 24, 2011

FLORENCE, Ala. – Tabitha Seaman, a 10th-grader at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, recently won an illustrated poetry contest sponsored by the UNA Department of Chemistry and Industrial and the Wilson Dam Section of the American Chemical Society. The contest, for local K-12 students, was in celebration of Chemists Celebrate Earth Day. Earth Day is April 22 each year. This year’s poetry contest theme was “Energy – It’s Everywhere!”

Seaman’s free-verse poem, “A Water Dream,” is being forwarded to the national poetry contest sponsored by the American Chemical Society. Her poem is included below:

The rushing falls calls my name
A natural beauty, so I think
   Pouring in a meandering stream
I dip my hand into a cold, crisp dream
